* Rendering speed : ArcGIS vs. MapInfo vs QGIS

I was asked but could not answer the question which GIS software is fastest: ArcGIS, MapInfo or QGIS? as I had never done a comparison test on them yet. I talked it over with my technical staff who said that question is too generic and may lead to misleading answers because different versions deliver different speed even from the same marque. For example, he feels previous versions of MapInfo are faster than MapInfo Ver. 11.0 probably because in his opinion, Version 11.0 is equipt with many plugins. Whatever it was, I said the proof in the pudding so he agreed we do a comparison test right away. I supplied and he installed QGIS 2.0 Win to his desktop computer already installed with ArcGIS 10.1 and MapInfo 11.0. Then I supplied him the cadaster map of Perlis state in .tab format and he went straight to convert a .shp file using QGIS which was already active at that time. The results of the rendering comparision test were ran at least twice so ensure consistency of result which are as follow. Care was also taken to ensure no other applications were opened at that time:

QGIS 2.0 software using .shp file - 2 seconds
QGIS 2.0 software using .tab file - 4 seconds

MapInfo 11.0 software using .tab file - 4 seconds

ArcGIS 10.1 software using .shp file - 4 seconds

Conclusion:
  1. It appears QGIS 2.0 using .shp files are doubly fast, rendering speed faster than QGIS 2.0 using .tab files but don't ask me why?;
  2. It appears QGIS 2.0 using .tab files have the same rendering speed as MapInfo 11.0 and ArcGIS 10.1;
  3. It looks like QGIS for a free GIS software is impressive as it offers rendering speed equal or faster than close GIS software.
The comparison test was carried out using the same desktop computer. Well , you don't have to believe me, you can always do it yourself. I did this test because I wanted to know first hand and with someone neutral to concur the findings along with me and without being prejudice to QGIS whatever the results maybe. But for what it's worth, QGIS is pretty remarkable for a free GIS software rubbing shoulders with the likes of well established proprietary GIS software.

At the end of the day, you may still not prefer QGIS but you cannot deny the fact that QGIS is something to be reckon with and granted it may not deliver somethings a proprietary GIS software can, it still can do many things a proprietary GIS software can ...and for free that's a lot to be said for a GIS software especially when you need to multiply that a number of users.

* I-PLAN takes shape

Centralized server system get assembled in server rack
Workstation will be installed with QGIS for GIS purpose
I-PLAN takes shape

After much teething problem, the integrated National Landuse Information System or I-PLAN developed by the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning, Peninsular Malaysia eventually took off on 2/10/2013. It is meant to integrate vertical and horizontally landuse information from all relevant public agencies involved in the preparation, management and maintenance of landuse information which comprises of 3 types of layers: existing landuse, committed landuse and zoning plan. It will cover a period of 27 months and is scheduled to compete by 31/12/2015. The centralized system will be built totally using Open Source Software; the principal software being the OpenGeo Suite and PostreSQL at the server running on a Ubuntu Server platform with Quantum GIS at the client or workstation running on a dual-boot Ubuntu/Windows platform. All the hardware and software have already been delivered and will be configured next year to allow the consultant to concentrate on the preparation of the Logical Data Model, Information Architecture and Metadata.

Ubuntu 13.04 and QGIS Dufour plugins
Ubuntu 13.04 and QGIS Dufour plugins
Ubuntu 13.10 and QGIS Dufour 2.0.1

Yesterday, I anxiously and successfully upgraded my Ubuntu from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10 live via the Internet. I was expecting some hiccups if the Internet line was not clean where in such cases, it is wiser to download the ISO file then burn an installation CD/DVD. It did not work perfectly then when I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 via the Internet and my Ubuntu 13.04 was installed using an installation DVD but not this time. Today, I did some update, yes, there were some but very little and everything went well so I gave QGIS Dufour a start followed by activating a vector landuse layer and adding the planning colours using my custom template. It did so beautifully meaning Ubuntu 13.10 and QGIS Dufour are both compatible....to me at least.  Having said that, at this point of time, there are only 16 default plugins but I would expect the number to increase as time goes by. So if there are some plugins not available which you are dependent upon such as Google Maps then you have to be a little patient for the developers to catch up and make them compatible and from experience, they usually do Best of luck for you QGIS-Ubuntuians!

Talk: Suveyors (J44-J54) get exposed to QGIS at INSTUN, Tanjung Malim 17.10.2013

Yesterday, I was invited and gave an hour's talk on Open Source GIS with QGIS being the reference tool but of course! It was held at the Survey Department's training institue in Tanjung Malim "where the deers and the antelopes roam" (Sorry I got carried away with a song). Actually to the locals, it is located in such a then forsaken place that only jinns can be found. Well I think I did a good presentation and as usual often got side track and was advised by the Secretariat to move on and not hog the limelight :-D Senior members there asked why I did not promote it with MaCGDI, the government agency that champions GIS and geospatial data which I said I already did last year so the ball is in their corner.

* ALAMAK!

I must have deleted a certain folder at my Picasa albums where Google collaborates and stores all my web photos. Not only have all the images in this blog vanished into thin cyber air but also my other blogs. This is one of the most serious blunders I've made. Oh me oh my ! Thankfully I've not depended solely on my Picasa photos and have the originals in the computer but it will takes time to update.

MMQGIS's Merge Layer

ZONING layer totals 185,310 features
GTNSMS layer totals 172,613 features
Logically, Merge layer total's 357,923 features when no common denominator exists between the two
Note Semasa data nulls until one scrolls all the way down
Note ZONING data nulls until one scrolls allt he way up

MMQGIS's Merge Layer

Today, I tested MMQGIS's Merge Layer in the DuFour version and I am happy to say that it works well. This is a good tool when there is a need to SQL data contained in separate layers. Of course, in the first place the two separate layers should have common denominators column e.g. lot number or else the software will assume each row is unique so instead of really merging the two layers side by side, it puts the tow layers one on top of the other. This means there is a need to clean the data thoroughly first before merging of two layers is desired. The point of the matter is that MMQGIS works extremely well with no hiccups eventhough the number of features between the two layers are different.

* QGIS 2.0.1-Dufour

QGIS 2.0.1-Dufour

QGIS 2.0.1-Dufour

I got a pleasant surprise today when I activated QGIS and my Ver. 1.8 changed into QGIS 2.0.1-Dufour. This appears to be available on the Ubuntu operating system and even the QGIS homepage still promotes Ver. 1.8 as their latest release. This appears even so on the QGIS Download page but I found that on the Ubuntu Software Centre, the regular Ver. 1.8 has been upgraded to the Ver 2.0.1. Icons have changed and even redistributed over the workscreen so there'll be some relearning here but I doubt it will take long since the text for the respective icon appears beside them. It's just out of the oven for me so I cannot comment on it ...yet. For the record, my office ubuntu qgis did not install perfectly but after totally removing the corrupt version and re-installing via terminal, everything now works fine.

I know I got trouble updating Quantum GIS patch files in the Ubuntu computer because recently it gave the above message. I sought the help of my son who likes to tinker in Open Source and Ubuntu where he recommended following Step 5 of this site. Me as usual, jumped into the deep end of the pool against the advice of a software specialist, another brother. Lazy me did a total copy and paste of the scripts but ended with an "abort" output. Then reading the first line of that section which requires one to copy and paste "one line at a time", things seem to work out fine. After the last line was entered, a restart is required. A recheck with the Software Updater gives a computer is up to date message. Yahoo!

* Between the drawer and the cupboard

Between the drawer and the cupboard
A top manager who is not IT saavy asked me to explain in simple layman language the difference between a desktop GIS and a relational database management system (RDBMS) server. I was caught off guard because I was so familiar with it that I was stumbling hard how to analogue the topic. I put on my thinking hat and thought how best to present the case. My friend offered an analogue approach and choose the task of moving from a slum to a proper house while I preferred to demonstrate by showing the difference in keeping things in a drawer and a cupboard. In a drawer, there is a tendency to dump anything or everything in it although it is possible to keep things neat and tidy. However, GIS data is often voluminous, something inappropriate to be kept in a drawer. Thus if many things were kept in a drawer to the brim, it will be difficult o manage. However, if all the items were transferred to a cupboard it would be comparatively much easier to store, manage, search, find and retrieve specific items because not only is the cupboard larger but also most cupboard have a few drawers and other odd spaces to accommodate items of different size. Thus the cupboard represents the desktop GIS while the cupboard represents the RDBMS server. I wanted to go further to elaborate (but am hesistant) how data kept in a desktop GIS is fundamentally kept in a table of rows and columns known as an Attribute Table but that situations which involve one-to-many could not be accommodated into that Attribute Table unless it was linked to a personal database system like Microsoft's Access or OpenOffice.org's Database alternatively to a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.org's Calc. So for the time being, I'm going to leave it as such.

Downgrading Ubuntu QGIS 1.9 to QGIS 1.8

Force version used here
QGIS 1.8 successfully installed but expect another surprise
Broken packages need prerequisite repair
Don't expect any success until QGIS repositories have been removed
Downgrading Ubuntu QGIS 1.9 to QGIS 1.8

Today, after frustrated not being able to activate Google Maps in QGIS 1.9, I decided to downgrade to QGIS 1.8. It was a trying experience because I'm not an IT man and eventhough I had removed QGIS's 1.9 brain and heart, it was still around under Synaptic Package Manager, still hanging around like a zombie and until I got rid of that, it was an impossible task. However, I eventually managed to downgrade QGIS 1.9 and install QGIS 1.8. If you are not interested, go no further but if you are, read on but there is a surprise at the ending which I need to give it another try at home to confirm it again coz all this is being done on my office computer. It was a long exercise of trial and error. At first, I used the Synaptic Package Manager not to 'uninstall' but to downgrade by 'Force Version'. However, it appeared that there were broken package which even after successfully repairing the broken packages, QGIS 1.8 refused to install because of broken packages which still seem to be around. I decided to go terminal mode and type "sudo apt-get purge qgis 1.9". Not good, so next I typed "sudo apt-get --purge autoremove". Not good so this time I dissected the file manager and making hidden files visible, deleted the QGIS folder under Home as well as the .gqis folder under .config folder. QGIS 1.9 still refused to go. This was madness. It appeared the spiritual umbilical cord was still around and it was not until I removed the repository links under System Setting could I install QGIS 1.8. The irony now was that after QGIS 1.8 got installed, 'Fetch Python Plugin' was not available. So I updated patch files by typing "sudo apt-get update" but results were not good. Un-installation and re-installation of QGIS under Ubuntu Software Centre also did not produce any fruitful results. Well, it's back to the drawing board for me but this time on QGIS 1.8. So far, I understand that when a new version of Ubuntu comes along, if you want the Python Plugins to work, QGIS developers must have ensured that the Python Plugin Repository is compatible with the new Ubuntu version or else QGIS is face these plugin hiccups because the Plugin repository installer does not work. So if a certain plugin is critical for the user, that user cannot follow the whims, fancy and progress of the Ubuntu operating system but must adhere to which version QGIS is compatible to which Ubuntu OS version.

Howard (see below under Comments) thankfully recommended going here for a OpenLayers fix. However, it is a hacker's approach and unless you know how to enter hidden files I do not recommend it. Even so, your computer file structure need to be the same as recommended for eg. I have a .qgis folder not a .qgis2 folder as reuired furthermore in my .qgis folder, python folder does not exit.

My son who is studying computer science and keen on open source software told me that when one upgrades an operating system by online upgrade such as what I did, there is a possibility of certain drivers required by certain applications could be missing causing certain modules refusing to work whereas when the operating system was installed via a CD installer, there chances of such missing files happening are slim. He advised me to reinstall my Ubuntu 13.04 using a Cd installer to fill up any missing files that could have been which I am in the processing of downloading an iso file. So when QGIS gives problem, one must ask in the first place whether the operating system had acquired all the necessary files and drives for various types of applications desired to be installed? If that was the case, one can then ask the second question that is when an application upgrades itself, whether all the plugins found in the previous version had been upgraded accordingly by the various developers? It was mentioned in the Internet that at QGIS, the concern is concentrating on coming up with a comprehensive and workable QGIS 2.0 and with a dateline to catch but with limited manpower and financial resources, one must not be too fussy, after all this is Open Source.

Missing plugins of Plugin Manager for Ubuntu QGIS 1.9 Master

I really want Google maps so I tried to install Sourcepole manually...
I successfully installed Sourcepole but even a reboot refused to add Google Maps etc. into QGIS. Sad!

Missing plugins of Plugin Manager for Ubuntu QGIS 1.9 Master

The Ubuntu Software Center offered QGIS 1.9 so I took the easy way and just installed it considering it's just a one button installation. I activated that QGIS but to my initial dissappointment, am greeted with a set of less colourful icons as compared to QGIS 1.8 which I preferred. What to do? It took a little while for me to get familiar with them since the icons of the 1.8 version were much clearer to be understood making them obvious graphics. So that's a minus point for me. Then came a bigger minus point: 'OpenLayers' from the Sourcepole Repository could not be found. I got so desperate so I even tried to install Sourcepole Repository manually but even that did not produce positive results what would be possible under QGIS Ver 1.8. Sadly, I could not activate Google Maps and others. It seems I am not the only one complaining about this. Ugghh. Double minus point here. A third point is that it is not possible to acquire 'Join Attributes' under Data Management Tools  although in QGIS version 1.8 it can be acquired by downgrading FTools to  Version 0.61. Triple minus point here. They say QGIS Ver. 2.0 is said to bring QGIS software to a much higher plane than the 1 series. I hope the developers  resolve these issues because they are still popular and if unresolved is a step backwards. We have to wait but it should be round the corner soon.

Training: JPS Malaysia gets trained in QGIS, 24-25.6.2013

After giving a technical briefing on QGIS last year to the Malaysian Darinage and Irrigation Department (JPS) at their training site at Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, their formal request has been formally realized the past 2 days. This was a big group, slightly more than 2 dozen participants that covered staff from HQ as well as state departments where a number of them were still new to the world of GIS. Their training institute even had a small cute hostel and even provided me a room for the 2 days.

Unseen auto-generated things that can lead to error

On-the-fly projection unselected
On-the-fly projection comes back when a new layer is created
Unselecting on-the-fly projection makes for a micro scale
User has to readjust to the appropriate scale with Google Hybrid...
only then create and save the point features
Everything done properly, selecting Zoom to layer extent is OK
Going back to the newly created layer still shows correct alignment
Unseen auto-generated things that can lead to error

If a layer is created without a user really understanding what is happening behind the scene, this can lead to error which the user then blames the software (as usual) and never himself. This is why is it important for the user to understand what he is actually doing in GIS and not just follow blindly. My example is the creation of a layer using Google Hybrid as a reference base. Although a user may have started off by unselecting on-the-fly projection, the moment a layer was created, on-the-fly projection   automatically comes on again and if not unselected, user will wrongly use the scale. Little things mean a lot.

Use Capture Coordinate carefully

Use Capture Coordinate carefully

The use of the Capture Coordinate will excite the user in search of a plugin to make his life simple and quick when he wants to extract the x, y coordinates of a point because this is an easy tool to use. However, if you jump straight into it and not learn the ropes first before you go into the ring, you might face a knock-out. Observe above that by just changing the CRS from WGS84 (EPSG4326) and WGS84/Pseudor Mercator (EPSG3857) the x,y coordinate differ eventhough they both deal with WGS 84. I do not know how much that differs but I would let a surveyor clarify that for me.
